Deep One

Deep Ones are common neutral aquatic mobs found in the Abyssal Chasm. They will cautiously stalk players at first, but can become allies or enemies depending on the players' actions.

Cave Compendium Entry

"The Deep Ones are some of the most mysterious and poorly-understood beings in all the Overworld. There are three species of Deep One, and they all live in a harmonious balance with each other, forming a single syncretic society. Initially, all Deep Ones will be wary of outsiders. They will follow and stalk any intruders to their abyssal domain from the shadows, and attempt to flee if spotted or chased. If a Deep One is cornered, it will toss an Ink Bomb and then disappear from sight. If hurt, the opinion of the attacker for all Deep Ones will decrease permanently, and they will eventually become outright hostile to the intruder. However, improving one's standing with the Deep Ones is not too difficult. Placing a Pearl on an Abyssal Altar near them can initiate an exchange of goods, which will gradually improve their opinion. Eventually, Deep Ones may gain such a favorable opinion of an adventurer that they will no longer flee their gaze and even assist in combat. In battle, Deep Ones will use their sharp claws and fast swim speed to brutally chase down and tear their prey, along with their sharp teeth-filled maws. Deep Ones can offer a variety of items to exchange at an altar, including sponges, Sea Glass Shards, and even a Gazing Pearl..."

Spawning

Deep Ones can spawn anywhere in the Abyssal Chasm.

Behavior

Deep Ones will freely swim about in a random fashion, occasionally diving to the bottom of the water to walk around. They are usually 2.2 blocks tall and 0.9 blocks wide, but switch to a height and width of 0.99 blocks when swimming. They can also leave the water and walk around on land, although they will stay in place if not interacting with players or other mobs.

Should a player or another mob hit a Deep One, it and all other Deep Ones within a 10-block radius will retaliate against them, as will any nearby Deep One Knights and Deep One Mages; once provoked, they will remain hostile until their target dies or exits their detection range. When attacking, they will chase their target while growling angrily, swiping at them with their claws or quickly biting at them upon reaching them. Any submarines that are targeted by Deep Ones within a 16-block radius will start emitting sonar pings while causing their control panel to pulse.

Resistances and weaknesses

As inhabitants of the Abyssal Chasm, Deep Ones do not sink in muck.

As aquatic mobs, Deep Ones take extra damage from the Impaling enchantment.

Bartering

Players are capable of bartering with Deep Ones via an Abyssal Altar. If a player puts a Pearl or Heart of the Sea on an Abyssal Altar, all Deep Ones within a 64-block radius will move towards it - upon reaching the Abyssal Altar, a Deep One will grab the offering off of it and inspect it for 2.5 seconds while murmuring excitedly before placing an item of their own, activating it.

Below is a list of items that Deep Ones can give when bartering.

Reputation

Deep Ones will react to players depending on their reputation. Initially, the player will have a reputation of 0, but it can change as a result of various actions they take, ranging from -100 to 100.

Below is a list of all the interactions players can have with Deep Ones.

Interaction Reputation multiplier
Bartering with a Deep One at an Abyssal Altar +5
Killing a Mine Guardian +1
Forcing a Deep One to throw an Ink Bomb [1] -1
Using a Magic Conch with the Taxing Bellow enchantment -2
Attacking a Deep One [2] -15
  1. Since they cannot throw Ink Bombs, Deep One Mages will not cause a player's reputation to decrease when close to a player for long enough.
  2. Players who damage Deep Ones with the Thorns enchantment will not decrease their reputation.

Stalking

Deep Ones will stalk players whose reputation is anywhere from -9 to 10; since players initially start with a reputation of 0, this is their default behavioral state. Deep Ones in this state will follow any priority players looking away from them within an 80-block radius, stopping to look at them once they get within 11 blocks - if within 45 degrees of the player's line of sight, they will flee. If the player stays within 9 blocks of a Deep One for 3 seconds, it will turn around and start throwing Ink Bombs at them, disappearing upon successfully blinding them; if attacked by a player in Creative mode, it will immediately turn around to throw Ink Bombs.

Upon returning to this behavioral state, a message saying "The Deep Ones now regard you with caution" will appear.

Aggression

Deep Ones will become aggressive towards players whose reputation is -10 or lower; upon reaching this behavioral state, a message saying "The Deep Ones now regard you with aggression" will appear. Deep Ones in this state will attack any priority players within an 80-block radius without provocation.

Neutrality

Deep Ones will become neutral towards players whose reputation is anywhere from 11 to 30; upon reaching this behavioral state, a message saying "The Deep Ones now regard you with neutrality" will appear. Deep Ones in this state will randomly follow any priority players within 25 to 12 blocks of them even when in the player's line of sight - however, they will not follow players within 3 blocks of them.

Helpfulness

Deep Ones will become helpful towards players whose reputation is 31 or higher; upon reaching this behavioral state, a message saying "The Deep Ones now regard you as a friend" will appear. Deep Ones in this state will follow any priority players within 30 to 12 blocks of them even when in the player's line of sight - however, they will not follow players within 3 blocks of them. Similarly to wolves, they will attack players or mobs that the priority player attacks, or those that damage the priority player unless the target has the same owner; as well as this, they will not attack tamed animals, but they will attack Creepers or Ghasts or if the priority player commands them to.

Summoning

Using a Magic Conch summons 3 Deep Ones, which rise from the ground with a large splash of water. Summoned Deep Ones will always be helpful towards the player who summoned them, regardless of their reputation - however, the summoner can still cause their reputation to decrease by attacking a summoned Deep One. After a minute, they will sink back into the ground with a large splash of water and despawn.
