Corrodents are common hostile mobs found in the Forlorn Hollows. They can burrow through blocks to move around and evade attacks, and will retreat from sources of light.

Cave Compendium Entry

"Corrodents are fossorial rodents found tunneling through the walls and floors of the Forlorn Hollows. These hostile beasts will emerge when they detect prey near them, and attempt to bite with their sharp front teeth. They can be difficult to fight, due to their ability to easily move through almost any block. But Corrodents are deathly afraid of all light, and simply placing a bright light like a torch near them will shock and scare them. During this attempt to flee, they can easily be slain. If slain, Corrodents can drop some of the coarse dirt they have dug up, and possibly some Corrodent Teeth."

Behavior

Corrodents will attack any player within a 16-block radius - they do not attack any other mob without provocation. When idle, they will aimlessly wander around while twitching their noses every so often, avoiding lava as they move about; despite being immune to fall damage, they will also avoid drops of more than 3 blocks. Occasionally, they may dig into the ground and burrow around for some time. Corrodents can burrow through any block with the exception of barriers, bedrock, command blocks, End portal blocks, End gateway blocks, jigsaw blocks, lights, moving pistons, reinforced deepslate, structure blocks, Volcanic Cores, glass, or tinted glass. When burrowing, they will stay within 10 blocks below the ground, expelling dirt particles from the ground and making a rumbling sound as they move about - if not moving, they will slowly rise upwards. When within 2 blocks below the ground, they will cause any blocks in a 5x5 area on the surface above them to crack as if being broken - these cracks will become larger as they get closer to the surface. Eventually, they may dig back up, leaping out of the ground upon resurfacing - a Corrodent will always dig towards the surface if it spends more than 15 seconds below the ground.

Upon reaching a target, a Corrodent will bite at them - after biting at them at least once, it will burrow up to 3 blocks below the ground and assume evasive maneuvers, digging back towards the surface after a minimum of 3 seconds.

If within 6 blocks of a light-emitting block that gives off a light level of 7 or more, a Corrodent will recoil in fear and slowly back away from it - if it moves out of range or is unable to for 2.5 seconds, it will immediately dig into the ground.

Being multi-part mobs, Corrodents will only take knockback if hit on the head.

As beasts of the Forlorn Hollows, Corrodents will move 16 blocks towards any mobs that get hit with Moth Dust within a 32-block radius, attacking them once they get within sight range - in addition to this, they are ignored by Forsaken under normal circumstances.

Trivia

  • Corrodents emit dog-like growls and barks when biting at targets in addition to similar-sounding yelps upon dying. PrismaticPinky, a sound designer for Alex's Caves, gave them these sounds in order to further evoke the vibes of feral, rabid beasts with big teeth.
    • Corrodents have unused sounds for chattering their teeth - it is unknown for what exactly they are meant for or when they will be added.
  • If a Corrodent tries to burrow through blocks it cannot pass, it will still enter its digging state but will be unable to move through the ground, providing for a humorous occurrence.
  • Occasionally, Corrodents will immediately dig back into the ground upon resurfacing after evading their target, and will even try to bite at them while below the ground - after doing this, they will lose sight of their target. This is not likely to be intended behavior.
