Gloomoths are common passive flying mobs found in the Forlorn Hollows. They will fly around sources of light, potentially attracting monsters such as Underzealots and Vespers.

Cave Compendium Entry

"Gloomoths are large, passive insects found fluttering through the darkness of the Forlorn Hollows. These bugs are prey to many of the large mammals here, and like their predators they have also been twisted by the darkness - though nowhere near as much. Gloomoths naturally seek out light sources, as it is part of how they navigate. This leads them to cluster around light-emitting blocks such as torches. Naturally, this brings them both close to the ground and brings in plenty of nearby predators that would usually stay lurking in the dark. Although they pose no threat on their own, Gloomoths represent far greater danger because of the predators they can bring. If slain, they can drop Moth Dust."

Behavior

Gloomoths will slowly fly around in a random fashion, bouncing off any walls or ceilings they fly into. If they fly into the ground, they will land and begin to crawl around for some time; upon jumping, taking knockback, or falling, they will fly back into the air.

Gloomoths will fly towards any torches, Bioluminescent Torches, lanterns, End rods, lit campfires, Glowstone, Shroomlights, Froglights, beacons, Ambersol, blocks of uranium, uranium rods, or radon lamps within a 32-block radius. Upon reaching a light-emitting block, they will fly around it for as long as it is active. In addition to this, they will avoid any nearby moth balls - a single moth ball will repel Gloomoths within a 4-block radius, with each added moth ball within a cluster adding another block to the cluster's repel range.

If a Gloomoth is sacrificed by a group of Underzealots, a Watcher will appear with a burst of shadow and a distorted rippling sound.

Being an arthropod, Gloomoths take extra damage from the Bane of Arthropods enchantment, and receive Slowness IV upon being hit.
