Vallumraptors are common hostile mobs found in the Primordial Caves. They hunt prey in small packs, and will raid chests for food to eat.

Cave Compendium Entry

"Vallumraptors are pack-hunting dinosaurs found commonly within the Primordial Caves. Ever on the prowl, these beasts will attempt to take down prey big and small - from local golden frogs to even a Grottoceratops, and even the occasional explorer. Attacking in tandem, these fearsome reptiles will leap great distances at their prey, all while others from their pack slash and bite, quickly dealing a large amount of damage in total. All Vallumraptor packs are usually [sic] led by an Elder, denoted by their orange markings and larger stature. Elders are stronger and have decent armor protection as well. If a Vallumraptor pack loses its Elder in combat, they usually will disperse from battle. Vallumraptors communicate with their pack through their calls. Vallumraptors can also open doors and chests using their crafty hands. They will steal any meat items from chests they can find. If a Dinosaur Nugget is taken from a chest by a Vallumraptor, it may enter a relaxed state after consuming it. During this relaxed state, the Vallumraptor can be approached and fed a Serene Salad in order to tame it. Tamed Vallumraptors can be made to follow, stay or wander, and are indispensable in combat due to their sneaky abilities. If a tamed Vallumraptor loses a lot of its health in battle, it will enter a stealth mode and rapidly begin to heal, only to re-enter combat once safely recovered. Tamed Vallumraptors can be bred with a Dinosaur Nugget, and will lay a clutch of eggs afterwards. Baby Vallumraptors that hatch nearby will imprint on their parent's owners."

Spawning

Vallumraptors can spawn anywhere in the Primordial Caves in groups of 6-7.

Behavior

Vallumraptors will attack any passive animals within a 32-block radius, in addition to any players that stay within 12 blocks of them. Any player or mob that attacks a Vallumraptor or tramples its egg by by standing or jumping on it will also provoke all Vallumraptors within a 32-block radius - interestingly enough, however, breaking the egg via mining it will not trigger this reaction. When idle, Vallumraptors will aimlessly walk around at a slow pace - occasionally, they may randomly cock their heads from side to side up to 5 times, in addition to hissing, lowering their heads to scratch themselves, shaking themselves, or throwing their heads back to squawk.

Below is a list of mobs that Vallumraptors will target on sight.

Mob Drops meat? Spawns in Primordial Caves?
Pig Yes No
Sheep Yes No
Cow Yes No
Horse No No
Donkey No No
Mule No No
Goat No No
Frog No Yes
Mooshroom Yes No
Sniffer No No

When attacking, Vallumraptors will run towards their target, biting at them or swiping at them with their claws upon reaching them. If their target is within 3-7 blocks away from them, they will crouch down for 1 second before leaping on them, emitting a loud hiss as they do so - Vallumraptors are able to leap a distance of 2 blocks vertically and 7 blocks horizontally.

Vallumraptors will follow any player that holds out Dinosaur Nuggets within a 6 block radius. As soon as the player puts away the Dinosaur Nuggets, however, they will immediately attack.

Vallumraptors take 10 less HP of damage from falling than most other mobs. As dinosaurs, they are also able to stand on dinosaur eggs without trampling them.

Since they are classified as creatures rather than monsters, Vallumraptors will persist on Peaceful difficulty. However, they will never attack players.

Opening doors

Vallumraptors will open any closed wooden doors in their way. Unlike most other mobs that can interact with wooden doors, Vallumraptors will not close an opened door behind them.

Pack hunting

Occasionally, a Vallumraptor may spawn as an Elder Vallumraptor, distinguished from standard variations by an orange head with blue markings, a larger crest, orange stripes on its back, and orange stripes and quills on its tail. Elder Vallumraptors will cause other Vallumraptors to form packs around them (up to a maximum of 8, including the Elder) - if any member of the pack starts attacking a target, the rest will also begin to give chase. Packs of at least 5 Vallumraptors will start attacking any Grottoceratops within a 32-block radius - should the Grottoceratops kill the Elder, however, the rest will flee from it for a minimum of 5 seconds.

Stealing food

Vallumraptors will run up to any pieces of meat, eggs (except their own), or raw/cooked Dinosaur Chops on the ground and briefly inspect them before quickly grabbing them. Once a Vallumraptor has food in its hands, it will hold it for some time before eating it, healing itself by 5 HP - Dinosaur Nuggets will be held for 2 seconds before being eaten, while all other food items will be held for 5 seconds. In addition to this, Vallumraptors can open chests and grab food from them - after taking food from a chest, they will immediately run away until the chest is out of their detection range, opening any doors in the way.

Taming

If a Vallumraptor steals a Dinosaur Nugget from a chest, it will eat it almost immediately. Upon eating it, it will lie down and take a nap for 10 seconds - if fed a Serene Salad while napping, it will automatically become tamed and heal by 5 HP, and the bowl will be returned to the player empty. Once a Vallumraptor is tamed, interacting with it causes it to cycle between one of the following behaviors:

  • Stay: The Vallumraptor sits down and stays in place. This is its default behavior upon being tamed.
  • Follow: The Vallumraptor follows its owner, teleporting to them if they are too far away.
  • Wander: The Vallumraptor aimlessly wanders about.

Similarly to wolves, tamed Vallumraptors that have not been ordered to stay will attack players or mobs that their owner attacks, or those that damage their owner unless the target has the same owner; as well as this, they will not attack Ghasts or tamed animals, but they will attack Creepers if their owner commands them to. If a tamed Vallumraptor falls below 45% HP during combat, it will become invisible and aimlessly run around for a minimum of 4 seconds while quickly regenerating health - once that duration of time passes, it will become visible again and return to attacking its target.

Breeding

Two tamed Vallumraptors can be bred with Dinosaur Nuggets. After breeding, one of the Vallumraptors will seek out dirt and start vigorously digging at it for a few seconds before laying 1-4 eggs and replacing the dirt block under them with a Fern Thatch. Similarly to turtle eggs, Vallumraptor eggs will drop as an item when mined using any tool enchanted with Silk Touch, otherwise breaking and not dropping anything - as well as this, they can be trampled. If on any block except ice, amber, or Amber Monoliths, they will crack every so often, hatching into Vallumraptor chicks upon cracking 3 times - this process usually takes 8-10 days, but will take 4-5 if the eggs are on a Fern Thatch. If a player is within 10 blocks of the eggs when they hatch, the chicks will automatically become tamed towards them. It takes 1 day for a Vallumraptor chick to reach adulthood.

After breeding once, Vallumraptors will be unable to breed again for 5 minutes.

Easter Eggs

Dancing

Vallumraptors will dance if they are within 5 blocks of a jukebox playing music - they will continue to dance as long as the music disc remains in the jukebox and the music is still ongoing. While dancing, they will stay in place, not reacting to players or other mobs in any capacity.

Naming

Naming a Vallumraptor "alan" retextures it to have a greyish blue color scheme, a tan underbelly, red stripes on its snout and tail, orange eyes with smaller pupils and blue markings under them, dark grey quills only on its neck, small red crests on its snout, and curved lips on its upper jaw instead of exposed teeth; naming an Elder Vallumraptor "Alan" retextures it to be beige and dark brown in color and have yellow eyes that have similarly small pupils, a crestless snout, and a similarly lipped mouth. These are a reference to the Velociraptors from Jurassic Park III, with the standard and Elder Vallumraptors resembling the male and female color schemes respectively - the name "alan" is a reference to the first act of the film, where the protagonist, Dr. Alan Grant, dreams about these Velociraptors talking to him and calling him by his name aboard a plane.

Amber Curiosity

Using an Amber Curiosity on a Vallumraptor causes it to have a special "retro" texture with light blue skin, white stripes on its body, white claws, white eyes with small, black pupils, a crestless snout, and curved lips on its upper jaw instead of exposed teeth; using one on an Elder Vallumraptor causes it to have a texture with jade-colored skin, alternating dark and light green stripes on its back, brown stripes on its head, and similarly white eyes and claws in addition to a crestless snout and lipped mouth. These are a reference to the snowy and forest Velociraptor from Fossils and Archaeology, a popular dinosaur mod that first released in July 2011 and received continuous updates over the next year. After its initial death, a revival mod was first released in February 2013, and continues to be updated today - Alexthe666, the main coder of Alex's Caves, had previously worked on this revival for 4 years, technically making it one of his older coding projects.

Tectonic Shard

Using a Tectonic Shard on a Vallumraptor causes it to have a special "eruption" texture with light brown feathers covering most of its body, gold-tipped feather crests on its neck and tail in addition to its arms, tan skin, orange eye markings, and a red crest with circular, gold-colored markings; using one on an Elder Vallumraptor causes it to have a texture with dark brown feathers, red-tipped feather crests, black skin, gold-colored eye markings, and a deeper red crest with more opaque, orange markings.

Trivia

  • Vallumraptors are classified as "cave creatures" - they are functionally very similar to creatures, but can only spawn underground.
  • Vallumraptors were one of the first mobs in Alex's Caves to receive custom sounds.
