Trilocaris are common bucketable neutral aquatic mobs found in the Primordial Caves. They are small nektobenthic arthropods that serve as a readily available aquatic food source.

Cave Compendium Entry

"Trilocaris are small prehistoric arthropods that can be found swimming in the many lakes and pools of the Primordial Caves. They can survive both in and out of water, and will bite if attacked first. They can be captured in a bucket, and if killed will drop a Trilocaris Tail. Trilocaris are frequent prey for many other denizens of this biome."

- Dr. Prof. Alexander Caverns, PhD.

Spawning

Trilocaris spawn in still bodies of water that are at least 8 blocks wide and 2 blocks deep in the Primordial Caverns, in groups of 1-2.

Behavior

Trilocaris will freely swim about in a random fashion, occasionally diving to the bottom of the water to crawl around for some time. A Trilocaris will always dive to the bottom if it spends more than 15 seconds swimming freely.

Trilocaris can leave the water and crawl around on land, although at a slower pace than at the bottom of the water. When on land, Trilocaris will wander as far as 9 blocks before returning to the water, as long as there is water within 16 blocks of themselves.

Trilocaris will retaliate against players or mobs that hit them, snapping their raptorial appendages to deal melee damage once they come close enough; unlike most other mobs, they can only damage their targets once every 3 seconds. Once provoked, a Trilocaris will remain hostile until its target dies or exits its detection range. However, if either of the two are on land, it will make no attempt to chase them - a Trilocaris in water will wait until its target returns to the water before continuing its attack.

Players can pick up Trilocaris with a water bucket, giving them a bucket of Trilocaris. Trilocaris placed with buckets do not despawn naturally. When a bucket of Trilocaris is used against a block, it empties the bucket, placing water with that Trilocaris swimming in it.

Being an arthropod, Trilocaris take extra damage from the Bane of Arthropods enchantment, and receive Slowness IV upon being hit.

Trivia

  • The snapping and crunching sounds Trilocaris make when hurt or killed are very similar to those Gammaroaches make, although the latter are underlaid with Geiger counter-like clicking noises.
    • In addition to this, Trilocaris use similar footstep sounds to silverfish.
  • In addition to the Primordial Caves, Trilocaris will also be able to spawn in the upcoming Ancient Aquifer.
