Raycat

Raycats are common passive mobs found in the Toxic Caves. They are undead cats that can be tamed and used to repel Nucleepers in addition to curing the Irradiated status effect.

Cave Compendium Entry

"The Raycat is a skeletal, undead feline kept alive by its radioactive powers. Although somewhat intimidating with its green glow, this cat is passive. Raycats do not need to feed since they heal by absorbing radiation from other nearby creatures, but they still will gladly accept Radgills. If fed a few of these Radgills, the Raycat can become tamed. Tamed Raycats can be made to follow, stay or wander. Although they will not defend their owner in combat, they will keep Nucleepers at a distance and occasionally absorb any Irradiated Effect of their owner. They can be bred with Radgills."

Behavior

Raycats will aimlessly wander around, avoiding water; despite being immune to fall damage, they will also avoid drops of more than 3 blocks. Similarly to standard cats, they will jump onto any chests, lit furnaces, beds, Metal Barrels, Waste Drums, Rusty Barrels, or Nuclear Bombs within 4 blocks and sit on them, only standing back up if they are pushed off the block or it is broken.

Nucleepers will avoid any Raycats within a 10-block radius. Nucleepers that are fleeing from Raycats will be unable to charge up for detonation until they get far enough - if they initiated their charge-up beforehand, they will reverse it, completely stopping should they fully reverse.

Resistances and weaknesses

Being an undead mob, Raycats are:

As inhabitants of the Toxic Caves, Raycats are unaffected by the Irradiated status effect, in addition to being immune to acid.

Taming

A Raycat can be tamed by feeding it Radgill - once tamed, Radgill will then be used to entice it to breed. Each Radgill has a 1⁄3 chance of taming the Raycat. Once a Raycat is tamed, interacting with it causes it to cycle between one of the following behaviors:

  • Wander: The Raycat aimlessly wanders about. This is its default behavior upon being tamed, so commanding it to switch to other behaviors is ideal for preventing it from wandering off.
  • Stay: The Raycat sits down and stays in place.
  • Follow: The Raycat follows its owner, teleporting to them if they are too far away.

If their owner is within 19 blocks of them and is affected by the Irradiated effect, Raycats will slowly absorb radiation from them. A Raycat will initiate its absorption by emitting a ray of green light from its torso towards its owner, removing the effect from them - if their owner is affected by multiple levels of Irradiated, it will remove one level of the effect from them. After a minimum of 15 seconds since the initial absorption, the Raycat will heal itself by 10 HP and receive Irradiated for 10 seconds, healing itself by 1 HP every second while it is affected. After it absorbs radiation once, a tamed Raycat will be unable to absorb again for a minimum of 15 seconds.

Breeding

Two tamed Raycats can be bred with Radgill, creating a kitten. After breeding once, they will be unable to breed again for 5 minutes.

Trivia

  • Raycats are not actually reanimated cat skeletons, but artificial constructs created by an ancient civilization for the purpose of scaring Nucleepers.
  • Raycats are classified as "cave creatures" - they are functionally very similar to creatures, but can only spawn underground.
  • Similarly to mobs affected with Irradiated, Raycats emit a hazy green glow from their body, highlighting their radioactive nature.
  • Raycats use similar sounds to standard cats, albeit with a prominent echo.
    • The sound they make when absorbing radiation from their owners is similar to their eating sound, albeit underlaid with a Geiger counter-like clicking noise.
  • Breeding Raycats results in an untamed kitten - it is unknown if this intended behavior or not.
