Vesper

Vespers are common flying hostile mobs found in the Forlorn Hollows. They will swoop down from the ceiling to attack targets when in range, but can be briefly knocked out of the air if blocked with a shield.

Cave Compendium Entry

"Vespers are gigantic bats twisted by the darkness of the Forlorn Hollows. They can either be found in pursuit of Gloomoths, their favorite prey, or roosting, hanging the ceiling [sic]. These hostile bats will attack any adventurer that wanders beneath them while roosting, and will continuously swoop in and out of the darkness to deal a nasty bite. If blocked with a shield, they will be temporarily grounded, making them easier to defeat. If slain, they can drop a Vesper Wing and some Guano. Vespers can also be grabbed by the resident Underzealots to be used in their rituals, to create a very powerful monster..."

Behavior

Vespers will attack any players or Gloomoths within a 52-block radius - they do not attack any other mob without provocation. When idle, they will hang from the underside of solid blocks while making quiet chirps in addition to twitching their noses and slowly swaying their ears slightly outwards. If not on the ceiling, they will fly around aimlessly, and their chirps will be louder and more spaced apart - an idle Vesper will always fly back towards the ceiling to hang from it if it stays airborne for more than 15 seconds.

Upon spotting a target, a Vesper will screech and immediately start flying towards them, baring its fangs to bite at them once it reaches them - after successfully hitting them once, it will fly to a height of 4 blocks above them and circle around them for a minimum of 3 seconds before swooping down on them again. If its bite is blocked by a shield, however, it will immediately drop from the air and start chasing after its target on the ground - despite being immune to fall damage, a Vesper on the ground will still avoid drops of more than 3 blocks under normal circumstances. After a minimum of 3 seconds, it will fly back into the air.

If caught by an Underzealot, a Vesper will fold its wings while struggling. If the Vesper is sacrificed by a group of Underzealots, a Forsaken will appear with a burst of shadow and a muffled screech, slowly rising to its feet while fading from a pitch-black silhouette to its standard appearance and briefly spreading its upper arms out upon spawning.

As beasts of the Forlorn Hollows, Vespers will attack any mobs that get hit with Moth Dust within a 32-block radius - in addition to this, they are ignored by Forsaken under normal circumstances.

Trivia

  • Vespers used to be lighter in color, but their texture was changed.
  • Vespers were one of the first mobs in Alex's Caves to receive custom sounds.
    • Vespers have unused sounds for biting at targets - it is unknown when they will be added.
  • Upon world reload, all Vespers within a loaded chunk will drop to the ground, allowing any nearby Underzealots to grab them.
