Notor

Notors are common semi-passive flying mobs found in the Magnetic Caves. They scan players before displaying an image of them, causing any nearby hostile mobs to home in on them.

Cave Compendium Entry

"The Notor is a strange, hovering passive creature found in the Magnetic Caves. Although it [sic] can not attack, they are definitely nuisances in their own right, as Notors will attempt to scan any foreign beings nearby. Notors will use these scans to build a hologram, in order to report back to monsters in this biome about any possible invaders. Any monster witnessing these holograms will instantly know where to focus its aggressive energy on. When killed, Notors can drop a Notor Gizmo, the source of their holographic abilities..."

Behavior

Initially, Notors will fly around aimlessly - occasionally, they may momentarily land on the ground to walk around. After a minimum of 15 seconds, they will fly up to a player or another mob - when within 8 blocks of their target, they will emit a beam of light from their ocular sensor to scan them for 10 seconds. Notors will attempt to scan any kind of mob except Teletor, Magnetrons, Boundroids, Ferrouslimes, or other Notors. If a Notor's target moves more than 8 blocks away from it, it will fly towards them to close the distance while continuing to scan them; if they move more than 15 blocks away, though, it will stop scanning them and fly within 8 blocks to restart the scan.

Once a Notor's scan completes, it will start flying around again. If there is a monster in sight, it will immediately fly towards it - once it gets within 8 blocks of the monster, it will display a hologram of its scanned target for 10 seconds, which its recipient will watch for that duration of time. If the Notor displays a hologram of a player, the monster that was displayed to will immediately start chasing that player down after the hologram disappears.

Notors are immune to the Magnetizing effect.

Since they are classified as ambient mobs rather than monsters, Notors will persist on Peaceful difficulty. However, they will only scan targets for 4 seconds, in addition to being unable to display holograms (due to a lack of monsters).

Trivia

  • Notors were the 5th mob to be added to the Magnetic Caves, being coded in after the Deep Ones were added to the Abyssal Chasm.
  • If exposed to the sky, Notors will sometimes endlessly fly upwards - this is not likely to be intended behavior.
  • Notors can cause neutral monsters to become hostile towards players by displaying their hologram to them - even Deep Ones that are helpful towards players will turn on their ally if displayed to. It is unknown if this intended behavior or not.
