Gammaroach

Gammaroaches are common neutral mobs found in the Toxic Caves. They will attack nearby players and mobs affected by the Irradiated status effect, and can pick up other hostile mobs before carrying them over to targets.

Cave Compendium Entry

"The Gammaroach is a gigantic, radioactive cockroach found scuttling around the Toxic Caves. Although these arthropods are initially neutral, they will attack anything that is Irradiated within their sights. When injured, the Gammaroach can release a cloud of radioactive gas as a defense. Although they are not strong fighters, Gammaroaches can flee battle to find a stronger monster. Once they find a monster, they can pick it up and drop it off at their initial target. This makes them a constant threat whenever the Irradiated Effect is active. If slain, Gammaroaches can drop some of their innards in the form of Toxic Paste..."

Behavior

When idle, Gammaroaches will aimlessly wander around, curling their antennae backwards while moving. They can step up one full block without having to jump.

If hit by a player or another mob, Gammaroaches will raise their abdomen to spray a cloud of radioactive gas into the ground. A Gammaroach's gas cloud covers a 2.3-block radius, lasts for 10 seconds, and inflicts Irradiated on players and mobs who step in it for 1 minute and 40 seconds, and can only be sprayed once every 8 minutes and 20 seconds - after it sprays once, the Gammaroach will be unable to spray again for 8 minutes and 20 seconds. Gammaroaches will also retaliate against their attacker, remaining hostile until the attacker dies or exits their detection range. When attacking, a Gammaroach will usually chase its target, tackling them upon reaching them; occasionally, however, it may seek out any hostile mobs within a 16-block radius and pick them up while dealing 1 HP of damage to them before running back to its target, dropping its rider off upon reaching them. In addition to this, Gammaroaches will attack any nearby players or mobs affected by Irradiated.

Gammaroaches can be fed a Spelunkie once; aside from unlocking the advancement "Apocalypse-Proof", this does not seem to do anything.

Since they are classified as ambient mobs rather than monsters, Gammaroaches will persist on Peaceful difficulty. However, they will not retaliate against attackers or attack players or mobs affected by Irradiated, only spraying their gas cloud when provoked.

Resistances and weaknesses

Being an arthropod, Gammaroaches take extra damage from the Bane of Arthropods enchantment, and receive Slowness IV upon being hit.

As inhabitants of the Toxic Caves, Gammaroaches are unaffected by the Irradiated status effect - however, they are not immune to acid.

Trivia

  • Almost all of the Gammaroach's sounds are underlaid by clicking noises like a Geiger counter's, highlighting its radioactive nature.
    • The snapping and crunching sounds Gammaroaches make when hurt or killed are very similar to those Trilocaris make, although they retain the aforementioned clicks.
    • Gammaroaches also use similar footstep sounds to spiders, albeit slightly pitched down in addition to having been given a slight echo.
  • Gammaroaches will not make sound when tackling targets unless they successfully hit them, at which point they may occasionally make two sounds instead of one.
  • Due to code left over from testing, Gammaroaches used to attack cows on sight. This was later removed.
