Gumbeeper
Gumbeepers are common hostile mobs found in the the Candy Cavity. They shoot a limited number of gumballs that bounce off blocks at targets, running towards foes and bursting into more gumballs once they run low on ammunition.
Cave Compendium Entry
"Gumbeepers are curious mechanical creepers that can be found patrolling the Candy Cavity. These bumbling machines may have low health, but they make up for it by attacking with a barrage of bouncing gumballs. Once a Gumbeeper has fired most of its gumball projectiles in the general direction of its target, it will attempt to rush towards them and explode in one final flurry of multiple gumballs. The ricocheting nature of the gumballs shot by a Gumbeeper often result in them upsetting other denizens of the Candy Cavity, which can be used to the advantage of any who fights them. If the Gumbeeper is slain before its final explosion, it can drop gunpowder and a Pile of Gumballs..."

Spawning
Gumbeepers can spawn anywhere in the Candy Cavity in groups of 1-2.

Behavior
Gumbeepers will attack any player within a 32-block radius. When attacking, a Gumbeeper will chase down its target, strafing around in a random fashion once it gets within 16 blocks of them - if it gets within less than 5 blocks away from them, it will retreat to a distance of 12 blocks. Once it gets within 30 blocks of them, within a clear line of sight, its coin mechanism will start to spin around for 3 seconds, at which point it will then start to shoot gumballs at its target every 1.5 seconds. Gumballs shot out by a Gumbeeper will bounce off blocks upon hitting them, doing so up to 5 times before despawning - if they succesfully hit a target, they will deal 4 damage. With every gumball shot, a Gumbeeper will consume 1⁄12 of the gumballs in its globe. Once it shoots 6 gumballs, its globe will become half-full, and it will start running towards its target - once it reaches its target, it will start trembling while causing its body to swell and flash white for 1.5 seconds before breaking apart with an audible crash, causing 15 gumballs to fly outwards in all directions. Similarly to a standard Creeper, a Gumbeeper will stop its detonation if the player gets far enough or out of its line of sight.
Similarly to standard Creepers, Gumbeepers can be ignited with flint and steel or fire charges, forcing them to burst.
Gumbeepers will flee from any cats within a 10-block radius. Gumbeepers that are fleeing from cats will be unable to detonate until they get far enough - if they initiated their detonation beforehand, they will stop it.
As creatures of candy, Gumbeepers are able to fall on Sugar Glass without breaking it.
Charged Gumbeeper
Similarly to standard Creepers, Gumbeepers can become charged if lightning strikes within 4 blocks of them. Charged Gumbeepers are distinguished from normal ones by the pink aura surrounding them, and gain the following abilities:
- They slowly regenerate health on their own over time.
- Their gumballs deal 6
damage upon hitting targets and can bounce off blocks up to 10 times before despawning.
- They shoot 3 gumballs at once in a spread pattern, with their firing rate decreased to 0.5 seconds.
- They have a 33% chance to not consume any of the gumballs in their globe with each shot.
- Upon detonating, they will cause 30 gumballs to fly outwards.
Since Gumbeepers are found deep underground, a charged Gumbeeper can never be created without player intervention.
History
2.0.0 | Introduced. |
2.0.1 | Fixed a bug where it would continuously detonate when affected by Sugar Rush. |
Trivia
- Gumbeepers use similar hurt and death sounds to standard Creepers, albeit underlaid with coin-like clinking noises.
- Unlike standard Creepers and Nucleepers, Gumbeepers can still explode after dying, potentially leading to players taking damage if they are not careful - it is unknown if this is intended or not.
- Due to code left over from testing, Gumbeepers attack Husks on sight.
